ERIC LELEU : BJ08 Instants Décisifs
May 16 - June 10, 2009
Opening Reception : Saturday, May 16 from 5 to 9 pm

DJ ERIC I and producer/composer Chère and video by Nicolas Cinguino for BLANK Shanghai.
GAME : Whoever finds the artist in one of the photos will win an original AP photograph, mounted and framed, worth 13,000 RMB. This will end at 8pm!

This series of photographs has been produced from nearly 4500 photos, edited on computer over the period of almost non-stop for one year to create 12 "perfect" photos, the crowds exactly as the photographer would have wished them to be, creating the perfect decisive instants during a brief moment in history called the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. This series of technically accomplished artworks is both a statement of the uncontested acceptance of Photoshop into the creative vocabulary of art photography, and a subtle poke at Cartier-Bresson's theory of the "instant décisif", saying, very very briefly that the perfect picture could or should not be staged, amongst a whole ton of other socio-political metaphor!

Do something different with your Saturday afternoon -- talk to an artist about her work! Artist Xiong Lijun, whose solo exhibit My Kingdom is running until May 30th, will be at SHiNE Art Space this Saturday at 3pm for a special reception.

I record those young people who are future leaders of this fanciful world. It is
not a critique; instead, it is a documentation for those who, in the future, wish to look back and rediscover this fragment of their lives where youth and naivety triumphs over fear.

HIROMITSU TAKAHASHI : THE tradition

Senwaka (2009), stencil print

HIROMITSU TAKAHASHI : THE tradition

May 17 - June 7, 2009

Opening Reception : Sunday, May 17th from 2 to 6 pm

This is to announce Hiromitsu's simultaneous exhibition between Shanghai and Tokyo for which he has created 10 new stencil-print works. Because he is young (49), he is still producing regularly, considering the current situation of Japan's stencil printmaking, we should be glad of that because no one else is working in this traditional "Kappa-zuri" technique. The edition size (how many copies of each design he makes) is usually less than 30 and he offers a wide range of designs.

We are particularly proud to be the dealers for Hiromitsu, who we could style "the last of the Kappa-zuri artists." Kappa-zuri is an age-old Japanese stencil process first used to make the complicated patterns of kimono. This technique was adapted for print making use by a combination of the efforts of Serizawa Keisuke (1895 - 1984) who was made a Living Cultural Treasure for his efforts, and Mori Yoshitoshi, (1898 - 1992) the darling of all the ladies of CWAJ. His playful nature, and amusing prints were the talk of the print town for more than 30 years until his death.
